PURPOSE: TO REVIEW THE IMPLEMENTATION OF SCOTTISH INTERCOLLEGIATE GUIDELINES NETWORK (SIGN) GUIDELINE 52 (ATTENTION DEFICIT AND HYPERKINETIC DISORDERS IN CHILDREN AND YOUNG PEOPLE) IN EACH NHS BOARD IN SCOTLAND
In response to a number of parliamentary questions and letters from MSPs about the management of children and young people with ADHD in Scotland the Scottish Executive Health Department asked NHS QIS to consider undertaking an audit to determine the extent to which SIGN Guideline 52 - Attention Deficit and Hyperkinetic Disorders in Children and Young People: A national clinical guideline, is being complied with in each NHS Board area. NHS QIS has agreed to undertake this piece of work.
Dr Fiona Forbes, Consultant Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist, NHS Lothian is chair of the project steering group (PSG) that is leading this piece of work on behalf of NHS QIS. The PSG is both multidisciplinary and multi-agency comprising key representatives from health, education and social services as well as members with a service user and carer perspective.
The project is being delivered in two stages. The first stage, which will be undertaken this year, is a detailed service profiling exercise which aims to map what services for children and young people with ADHD have been commissioned with partner agencies, and are available in each NHS Board area.
The second stage of the process, which will be undertaken during 2007, aims to review the extent of implementation of SIGN Guideline 52 in each NHS Board area.
The information gathered by each of these exercises will inform two national reports outlining service provision across NHSScotland and the extent to which SIGN Guideline 52 is being implemented in each NHS Board area. The project is scheduled to report by March 2008.
