Clinical governance lies at the heart of our health service Each NHSScotland board uses clinical governance to drive:
- quality assurance
- quality improvement
- patient safety.
Within your healthcare team, clinical governance will ensure everyday routines and practices are providing patients with care that is:
- safe
- effective
- focused on their needs.
Our role in clinical governance
NHS Quality Improvement Scotland (NHS QIS) has responsibility for supporting the implementation of clinical governance across NHSScotland.
Our Clinical Governance Support and Development unit (CGSDU) provides you with:
- combined national and international knowledge on clinical governance and patient safety
- coordinated support, advice and guidance
Clinical Governance and Patient Safety Support was our previous title.

Suicide reporting system
The suicide reporting system was transferred from the Mental Welfare Commission to NHS QIS in April 2008.
Please send all suicide reports of patients who have had contact with mental health services (notifications and reviews) to NHS QIS.
