Best Practice Statements provide advice and guidance to nurses, midwives and allied health professionals in relation to specific areas of healthcare. The Statements promote the delivery of consistent levels of healthcare for patients no matter where they access NHSScotland's services. The Statements themselves are comprised of:
- the best evidence available at the time
- agreed opinion
- examples of good, as well as innovative, practice.
The Statements are developed using a systematic process that includes:
- the involvement of NHSScotland staff and service users (e.g. patients)
- gathering and reviewing the best supporting evidence available at the time
- the study of examples of current practice
- widespread consultation with healthcare professionals and the public.
The Statements address those healthcare issues where there are recognised instances of variation in practice.
Each Best Practice Statement is reviewed after three years and, if necessary, updated.
