About the Network

This network supports the development of clinical practice and is a valuable asset to the orthoptic profession, and can potentially alter and improve our current practice, ultimately benefiting patients. There are challenges ahead if we are to embrace the concept of practice development.

Mission Statement

Network Aims

The network will aim to:

  1. Develop knowledge of practice development amongst Orthoptists working in Scotland
  2. Develop an evidence base to practice
  3. Facilitate the development of skills of clinicians to implement practice development
  4. Develop training through identifying gaps in professional practice
  5. Share information of practice development
  6. Actively share evidence and effective practice
  7. Share resources locally and nationally
  8. Share expertise in the practice development networks and in the multidisciplinary networks
  9. Encourage equity of service
  10. Raise awareness of the work carried out by Orthoptists amongst other AHP and health professionals.
  11. Represent the profession of Orthoptics at local and national level within the practice development network for allied health professions.
  12. Forge links with other AHP s in the practice development network for allied health professions.
  13. Engage in multidisciplinary network activities with a view to improving the quality of patient care

Orthoptics Patching Survey

A recent survey was carried out by the NHS QIS Orthoptic Practice Development Network across the whole of Scotland on the subject of patching in children. Patching is a very common treatment prescribed by Orthoptists to improve the vision in an amblyopic (lazy) eye. The information gained from this survey was used to see if there is anything Orthoptists can do to make this experience easier and more fun for the child and their parents.

A report of recommendations from this survey will be available shortly.

Orthoptics Poster

The 'Seeing After Stroke' poster and leaflet were developed by the Practice Development Network for Allied Health Professions - Orthoptics and funded by the Practice Development Unit, NHS Quality Improvement Scotland.

Through displaying the poster and leaflet within your local stroke units, it is hoped that this will help to raise the profile of orthoptists working with stroke patients and lead to more appropriate referrals.
