Perineal Repair After Childbirth: A procedure and standards tool to support practice development.

Perineal trauma and repair was identified as a high priority by the national practice development midwives network in 2004.  At a network event in 2005 concern was raised that national guidance was not being adopted across Scotland.  The network identified that a national procedure and standards document would be of benefit in further encouraging a consistent evidence-based approach to perineal repair.  Therefore the practice development unit (PDU) of NHS Quality Improvement Scotland (NHS QIS), with input from the network, has developed a procedure and standards tool for perineal repair to support practice development.  The aim of the tool is to encourage the adoption of evidence-based practice across Scotland’s maternity units.

The new document can be downloaded here. Its title is
Perineal repair after childbirth - procedure and standards tool (PDF, 473K, 1min 5secs)

Positive and Innovative Resource: A Mental Health Interactive Database (Scotland) (PIRAMHIDS)

The PIRAMHIDS website was launched on 5 September 2008 at the conference - Delivering Better Mental Health - The Nursing Contribution.

PIRAMHIDS has been created in response to the Review of Mental Health Nursing (2006) and developed in response to Rights, Relationship and Recovery Action Plan -Action 23. Its function is to serve as a facility for sharing positive and innovative practice in mental health with an emphasis in evidence based practice. The aspiration for PIRAMHIDS is that it becomes the primary information sharing site in mental health. The database can be found at www.piramhids.com.

NHS QIS is now actively seeking submissions of positive and innovative practice in mental health to be considered for inclusion on the website.  Contact David Thomson, Mental Health Project Manager (dthomson2@nhs.net) for further information and submission guidelines.

Training Opportunity

In 2006 the Practice Development Unit of NHS Quality Improvement Scotland supported 350 nurses to do an Asthma course in collaboration with  Education for Health. Following a successful celebration event in March at which the Health Minister presented nurses with their awards, a further 100 Asthma courses were arranged for early in 2007

In addition, NHS QIS agreed to fund 200 nurses to undertake COPD Diploma courses in Scotland run by Education for Health, beginning in June 2007. The venues for these courses are spread across Scotland, and each Health Board was invited to nominate candidates for the course.

The courses were all filled, and will all be completed by the end of July 2008. All feedback to date has been very positive and overall this has been a very successful project.

Midwifery Event 14 December 2007

All practice development midwives, consultant midwives, heads of midwifery and LSAMOs were invited to the midwifery event on the 14th December 2007 held in Pollock Halls, Edinburgh.  Eileen Moir, director of nursing and practice development, opened the day and was delighted to be able to meet some of the network members.  Tiffany Conroy, senior trainer with the Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) presented to the group and invited questions about JBI and using it in clinical practice.  In the afternoon the network received a presentation from Miranda Page of Queen Margaret University who presented on the findings of the perineal trauma and repair project.  The group then had the opportunity to discuss membership and the direction of the network in the future.  Feedback from the event has shown that it was a great success and attendees found it useful and informative.
