Bowel Screening Programme Clinical Standards

Clinical Standards

Bowel Screening Programme February 2007 (PDF, 246K, 53secs)

About these Standard

The project group responsible for this work first met in February 2006 and was chaired by Professor Bob Steele, Professor of Surgery, NHS Tayside. The group considered a number of topics surrounding the screening programme and decided on six key areas for clinical standards.

These are:

  • general
  • call-recall
  • the screening process
  • the laboratory process
  • pre-colonoscopy assessment
  • colonoscopy and histopathology

NHS QIS took advice from the Scottish Bowel Screening Centre (SBoSC) and consultation from NHS organisations to develop these standards. The process and evidence used during development is documented and included in the above PDF.

NHS QIS has also developed the quality standards for breast screening, cervical screening and diabetic retinopathy screening programmes.
