NHS Borders

  1. The Board uses a validated pain assessment tool during labour to assess and monitor pain levels. This tool is used to continually assess pain through to the postnatal period and forms part of the maternity observation chart. The review team considered this a good practice approach in pain assessment and management.

NHS Lanarkshire

  1. The Board’s clinical effectiveness maternity subgroup has produced a progress table for all maternity services guidelines. The table outlines the title of each guideline, the current status of the guideline, eg whether it is being reviewed, the name(s) of staff responsible for developing and/or updating the policy and the policy’s review date. The review team considered this a good practice approach to maintaining up-to-date guidelines.

NHS Lothian

  1. The delivery suite at SCRH has a dedicated room for women categorised as having a ‘high risk’ delivery level. This room has theatre facilities in place which eliminates transfer time to the theatre suite in an obstetric emergency.

NHS Western Isles

  1. The maternity unit at Western Isles Hospital provides two placements each year for trainee midwives based in Inverness. These placements are for a 10-week period during which trainee midwives work under supervision to gain experience of remote and rural midwifery practice.
