About the Reports

Anaesthetists are involved in the care of two out of every three patients admitted to hospital. The NHS Quality Improvement Scotland (NHS QIS) Anaesthesia Project Group concentrated on the provision of anaesthesia care for patients having operations or procedures, in particular focusing on key elements that have a direct impact on the quality of care a patient receives before, during and after anaesthesia. The Group developed four standards, covering the organisation of anaesthesia services, and preoperative, intraoperative and postoperative care. These reports presents the findings from the peer review of performance against the standards.

About the National Overview

The Anaesthesia Project Group was established in January 2002 under the chairmanship of Professor Gavin Kenny, Professor of Anaesthesia and Head of Department, University Department of Anaesthesia, Glasgow Royal Infirmary.

The Clinical Standards for Anaesthesia - Care Before, During and After Anaesthesia were developed by this group and published in July 2003 following extensive consultation. Copies of the standards are available on request from NHS QIS or can be downloaded by clicking here. Peer review visits to all NHS Board areas and one Special Health Board in Scotland were conducted between June 2004 and March 2005 to assess performance against the standards. A local report on each NHS Board visit, including a detailed assessment of their performance against each standard, has also been published and can be downloaded below or requested from the Performance Assessment Unit.

This report presents a national overview of anaesthesia services in Scotland, reporting on performance across Scotland against the standards and including relevant examples of local initiatives.
