Project objectives:
- To establish the number of In-Utero Transfers (IUTs) in Scotland, analysing them according to demographics, clinical issues and decision making process
- To understand the toll on the families of mothers subjected to IUT, financially and in terms of the effect of the displacement (eg, childcare, work, etc)
- To make recommendations about the need to have a “joined up service” offering advice and co-ordination for both in-utero and ex-utero transfers

About this project
Scotland has 55,000 births per annum and sub-specialist services for mothers and infants are available in a limited number of institutions. In-utero transport (IUT) ensures that expectant mothers are in the facility deemed appropriate to their clinical situation at the time of intended delivery. The project reviewed every IUT between August 2006 and February 2007 from the 42 delivering maternity services in Scotland.
