Scottish Patient Safety Programme Fellowships

A programme of additional learning and coaching support for clinicians as part of the Scottish Patient Safety Programme (SPSP) Ref: FPS1

Closing Date: Friday 5 September 2008
Interviews are anticipated to be held at the beginning of October 2008.

About the programme

With support from the Health Foundation (www.health.org.uk) we are able to offer a unique development opportunity to five enthusiastic clinicians committed to the Scottish Patient Safety Programme (www.scottishpatientsafetyalliance.org).

SPSP fellowship is a 10 month programme of distance learning, coaching and focused residential seminars (3x 4 days) covering:

  • improvement theory, methods and tools
  • measurement for improvement
  • reliability, systems and design for safety
  • working with people, motivation and team building, and
  • leading clinicians through change.

Fellows will be expected to network with colleagues undertaking similar activities in the UK and abroad, encouraged to attend and present at the International Quality Forum and to visit an organisation with a strong track record of improvements in quality and safety.

This programme has been developed in partnership with NHS QIS, NES, the Health Foundation and NHSScotland Boards.

About you

Participants will need full support of their employing organisation and explicit sponsorship from the Medical or Nurse Director and the Chief Executive. They will be able to demonstrate an interest in service improvement and may already be actively involved with the SPSP in their workplace. The programme will provide a grant to the employing authority to compensate for the clinical release time and cover teaching and accommodation costs for the residential component of the fellowship.  Fellows will also receive funding to support their attendance at the International Quality Forum.

These fellowships offer an excellent opportunity to increase knowledge and expertise in leading national patient safety improvement, while supporting Boards locally. The fellows will gain experience in applying theory and practical knowledge locally, but will also have opportunities to support the national agenda.
