Prospective Audit of Tonsil and Adenoid Surgery with disposable surgical instruments

Project objectives

  • To demonstrate the safety of adentonsillar surgery in Scotland by carrying out a case note review of readmission within 28 days of surgery or return to operating theatre to secure bleeding, and by implication demonstrate the safety of disposable adenotonsillar instruments.
  • To facilitate the amalgamation of Scottish data with the UK tonsil audit data

About this project

A prospective audit to assess the safety of adeno tonsillectomy in Scotland following the introduction of single use instruments for tonsil and adenoid surgery. Single use instruments were introduced to prevent the potential transmission of the prion that produces vCJD. The work follows on from a 3-month retrospective safety audit in January – March 2002 which concluded that complication rates had not increased following the introduction of disposable instruments
