About this impact report

This report details the impact of our external peer review of blood transfusion services in Scotland . Together with the Scottish Blood Transfusion Service (SNBTS), we evaluated the peer review process in 4 NHS boards.

Each NHS board could connect positive changes to systems and levels of care with their peer review. Most NHS boards directly attributed these changes to the review process.

Our findings

We found that the external peer review process of blood transfusion has had a significant impact on quality improvement.

We observed the work of the external review teams and found the process to be:

  • thorough
  • expert
  • fair
  • balanced
  • and positive

The reviews resulted in significant changes in policy and practice. And the review process helped to create an evidence-based agreement. Practitioners generally believe that patient care will improve as a result.
