Access the Service Profile Reports
NHS QIS undertook an exercise to profile IPCU provision in Scotland in summer 2009. Each territorial NHS board completed a service profile form which asked questions about how mental health services are structured locally and how people access IPCU care. Teams of stakeholders including clinical staff, carer representatives and NHS QIS support staff held follow-up meetings with each NHS board.
These local reports are based on the information gathered from the service profile forms and the follow-up meetings.

Auditing Scotland’s IPCUs
Intensive psychiatric care units (IPCUs) were addressed in NHS Quality Improvement Scotland’s (NHS QIS) 3-year strategic work programme, Improving the Quality of Mental Health Services, 2005-2008, where NHS QIS made a commitment to undertake an audit of IPCUs in Scotland. In addition, the Scottish Government Health Directorates (SGHD) Mental Health Benchmarking Project (technical appendix, 2008) recommended that NHS boards standardise their definitions of IPCUs.
2010 National Overview
To ensure that we have as full a picture of IPCU care as possible, a parallel project is looking at the experiences of current and former IPCU inpatients and their informal carers. The Mental Welfare Commission will visit IPCUs on behalf of NHS QIS and ask patients about their experiences. In addition, Voices Of eXperience (VOX) a national service user led organisation will facilitate regional focus groups with former IPCU patients. The outcomes of this work, along with an analysis of the national picture were published in a national overview in June 2010 and you can read it here
